Genotoxic profile among e-cigarette consumers, cigarette smokers, and nonsmokers

It is widely believed that e-cigarettes are less harmful than conventional cigarettes because they have a lower nicotine content. In contrast to this notion, several in vitro studies evaluated and demonstrated the genotoxicity associated with e-cigarette smoking. However, there lack of human on e-cigarettes. This pilot study compared indicators users, cigarette smokers, nonsmokers. A total 84 healthy participants, including 20 31 33 nonsmokers, were recruited. Genotoxicity was by measuring tail moment (TM), length (TL), % DNA intensity (%T) using comet assay as an indicator damage blood detecting micronuclei buccal cells micronucleus (MN) cytome assay. Bivariate analyses showed no significant difference TM TL between users but both groups, three parameters significantly higher nonsmokers (p<0.02). contrast, frequency (40%) smokers (27.5%). Our findings indicate similar genotoxic effect regular and, therefore, contradict notion safer cigarettes.
